Reports have surfaced that police are now investigating whether a video from a bakery shows Ariana Grande licking a tray of doughnuts that she did not purchase. The leaked video was posted on celebrity gossip website TMZ on Tuesday.
The doughnut shop in Lake Elsinore in Southern California took the video, which appeared to show the 22-year-old singer and a man with her lick the doughnuts while the shop’s workers were occupied. The cashier on duty at the store reported that Grande didn’t purchase any of the doughnuts she allegedly licked.
Lake Elsinore police and Riverside County public health officials are reviewing the video to see if the pop star did indeed taint the doughnuts, which could have been sold to other customers throughout the day. Grande’s representatives have declined to comment on the police investigation.
The incident apparently occurred during the Fourth of July at Wolfee Donuts. A spokeswoman for the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health reported that the agency was investigating why the doughnuts were left out unprotected and exposed to the public, which is a violation of state food laws.
The spokeswoman, Dottie Ellis-Merki, said in an email to the Associated Press, “During the investigation, the manager did state they normally don’t leave donuts out like was shown in the video. The employee went to the back to retrieve freshly made donuts by request of the customer and left the trays out while getting other trays.”
Grande has apologized for another part of the video that appears to show her saying “I hate America.” During the incident at the doughnut shop, Grande apparently launched into a tirade about how she hates America and Americans.
In a statement to the Associated Press on Wednesday, Grande said that she’s a proud American. The statement read, “I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I’ve always made it clear that I love my country. What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was buying the doughnuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more discretion with my choice of words.”
Grande was scheduled to appear Saturday at the MLB All-Star game for a performance, but canceled the appearance after having several wisdom teeth removed Monday.
