The Senate failed to advance a bill that would defund Planned Parenthood in light of a troublesome string of videos about the group. It was not a surprise. The anti-abortion Center for Medical Progress has so far released four videos in which people posing as representatives of a company that purchases fetal tissue converse with Planned Parenthood officials.
The measure had not been expected to get the 60 votes needed to move it toward a final vote because Republicans needed several “yeas” from Democrats, who think Planned Parenthood is just fine like it is.
The vote to bring debate on the bill was 53 against to 46 in favor. Both sides voiced thoughts after the vote.
Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa said, “The American taxpayer should not be asked to fund an organization like Planned Parenthood that has shown a sheer disdain for human dignity and complete disregard for women and their babies.”
Democrats took a different tact of course.
“It’s our responsibility in the Senate to assure that American women have access to care. It’s our obligation to protect our wives, our sisters, our daughters, our granddaughters — protect them from the absurd policies of a Republican Party that’s lost its moral compass.” Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev, said before the vote.
Lost its moral compass? Really?
In April, Reid (D., Nev.) confirmed the suspicions raised among Republicans, he lies on the Senate floor.
Reid has no regrets about accusing Mitt Romney, without evidence, of failing to pay his taxes. “Well, they can call it whatever they want,” Reid told CNN. “Romney didn’t win, did he?”
What mattered most to Reid was that Romney lost and Obama won. In liberal politics the end justifies the means.
On one hand the Republicans has lost its moral compass for its stance on Planned Parenthood, Senator Reid can lie without fear of reprisal, because lying doesn’t count on the moral scale any longer? Sure that works.
The bill was never going to pass to begin with, and likely won’t in the future, but the last person to discredit the efforts with talk about a moral compass is Sen Reid.
Reid recently announced he will not seek reelection next year. The liberal left is going to miss him.
